Key aspects of the coastal garden are its soothing colour palette and use of native plants. Visual accents are created by nautical-themed decorations and the sparse use of vibrant colours.

Windbreaks made of plants or fences are used to protect seating areas from sea breezes. Natural materials are preferred. Stone, wood or shells give the feeling of connection to the environment. Teak furniture is durable and fits well with the coastal garden style.

Tough, native plants are chosen that can withstand salty and windy conditions and grow well in sandy soil. As a result, coastal gardens require little maintenance.
