Characteristics

  • geometric

  • subdued colour palette

  • balanced

The formal garden derives from 17th -century French gardens. Originally, this garden style was used at luxurious royal estates, such as Versailles. The formal style was an expression of French rationalism. Despite its royal origins, this garden style lends itself well to gardens of any size.

The formal garden is symmetrical and has a clear, geometric plan. This gives it a balanced appearance. There is a central axis leading to a central focal point (e.g. a statue or a fountain). Clear lines are underlined by classical planting, consisting mainly of trees, hedges and sparse flowering perennials. The prevailing colour is green, the flower colour is white. A central water reservoir reflects and emphasises the symmetrical surroundings.
