The modern garden has its origins in modernism. Modernism emerged in Europe at the beginning of the 20ste century, first in architecture and art, and only decades later in garden architecture. Dutch garden architect Mien Ruys (1904-1999) was the pioneer of modern garden design.

Today, the modern garden is characterised by clean lines and an asymmetrical, geometric layout. Natural materials such as stone, gravel and wood are used, in soft colours (light grey, beige or white). Plants are part of the architecture: uncluttered, subdued and planted in blocks. The prevailing colours are green and white. The use of water provides reflection, movement and the creation of sound.
