The tropical garden style is inspired by gardens in areas around the equator with warm and humid climates, but can also be used in colder climates. This is achieved by incorporating distinctive tropical elements into the garden design and by choosing hardy, tropical plants.

In the tropical garden, there is an abundance of planting of different heights. The tall tropical trees, such as palm trees and banana plants, form a canopy and give the feeling of security and privacy. They provide shade to the lower plants. The Chinese fan palm is hardy in the Dutch climate when planted in the sun and sheltered. Tree ferns are another hardy option when properly cared for.

Plants with bold, flamboyant foliage and with colourful, exotic-looking flowers are chosen. Finger plant, palm lily, hibiscus shrub and black bamboo are good choices for cooler climates. Ferns and heart lilies are very suitable as ground covers. Some greens such as rhubarb and chard fit perfectly in a tropical garden because of their large leaves and pink stems. Indian flower reeds can be grown in pots and brought indoors for the winter. Dahlia, crocosmia, African lily and annuals such as begonia, geranium and coleus, provide an extra burst of colour and fragrance. On the walls, climbing plants such as jasmine, passion flower and trumpet vine are used.

Tropical plants grow best in a sheltered spot in the Dutch climate and need moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Drip irrigation can ensure that the soil remains constantly moist. Applying a layer of mulch helps to retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Tropical plants can also be planted in containers or pots.

Water in the form of a pond, waterfall, fountain or stream is an essential element in tropical gardens. Involving wildlife (butterflies, birds and frogs) enhances the tropical feel.

Natural materials such as stone, wood and bamboo are used for terraces, paths and furniture. The colours of cushions and decorations are warm and intense, think lime green, pink, red, orange and yellow.

Installing evening lighting adds a dramatic accent to the garden and creates a magical atmosphere.
